Persephone I

from $72.00

Persephone is the beloved daughter of Demeter, the goddess of the earth. She was abducted by Pluto, god of the Underworld, and was forced to live there as his queen. Demeter, responsible for the prosperity and fruitfulness of the earth, went into mourning, producing a terrible famine. The people of Earth prayed to Zeus to allow her to return to her mother. He was willing to do this, provided she had not eaten anything in Hades. Unfortunately, she had eaten the seed of a pomegranate and was allowed to return for only half of the year. This is how the Greeks explained the existence of winter and summer.
